Spotlight on Keralan Cuisine

Spotlight on Keralan Cuisine

A browse of our shop pages https://mylocalindian.com/our-shop/ may have introduced you to dishes that you’ve not seen before on an Indian restaurant menu, as well as ingredient and spice combinations that are intriguing. In this latest blog we explore the delights of Keralan cuisine which is the rich source of inspiration for our extensive range of over 80 meal options here at My Local Indian.

Kanika Saxina from Travel Triangle offers the following introduction:

“There’s a reason travelers go gaga over the varieties and flavours of Kerala cuisine! Inspired by a fusion of Malabari, French, and Arabian influences and enhanced with a touch of Kerala’s unique culture, each dish in the state is an experience in itself that will leave you asking for more! From the enormous platters of vegetarian dishes like Sadya, the range of non-vegetarian dishes made with seafood, lamb, pork and beef, to the sweet and savoury delicacies, the food of Kerala will take you on a joyride!

The staple food of Kerala is greatly influenced by the history and culture of the state. It’s a blend of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, in which the latter is prepared a variety of items like fish, poultry and red meat. Rice, fish, and coconut are the most common ingredients of almost all Kerala famous food. The flavours are enhanced with chillies, curry leaves, mustard seeds, turmeric tamarind, black pepper, cardamom, clove, ginger, cinnamon”

The idea for My Local Indian came when to when a group of Keralan ex-pats here in the UK gathered together to discuss the delicious homemade food they’d enjoyed in their younger days. Where could they taste such authentic food? Their answer was to start their own restaurant, and by using the finest ingredients and the best chefs they came to be appreciated by the British public, winning many awards.
